It was Letterman’s first time on the air since Williams’ stunning suicide, and the host shared memories from the 1970s, when Williams’ explosive act hit the Comedy Store in Los Angeles and made the other comedians feel like “morning dew” in the face of a “hurricane.”

Williams was “like nothing we had ever seen before,” said Letterman, who later got a guest spot on “Mork & Mindy” thanks to Williams.

Letterman went on to describe Williams’ decades-long affiliation with Letterman’s late-night shows and shared a montage of some of their best moments together.

“Beyond being a very talented man and a good friend and a gentleman, I’m sorry, like everybody else, I had no idea that the man was in pain, that the man was suffering,” concluded Letterman. “What a guy.”

It’s definitely worth watching.
