The top seven finalists of American Idol left their fates in each other's hands with a theme of "competitor's picks," but one contestant fell short of his goal and ran out of luck on his journey.
Thursday night's half-hour segment kicked off with yet another left-field celebrity cameo, as actor Kevin Bacon filled in for Ryan Seacrest with the show's opener. His appearance gave the remaining singers of Season 13 an unexpected perk: They can now link themselves to Bacon in the infamous six degrees of separation game.

After the traditional Idol "last supper" gathering, which saw the top seven discuss the evening's events, and a Ford commercial, where the Idols waxed poetic about what they would do with a Ford Mustang (props to Jena for fantasizing about making out with her non-existent boyfriend in the company's famed muscle car), Seacrest got down to business, cutting down the top seven to six.
Mentor Randy Jackson once again gave his thoughts on the previous night's performances. His advice to Dexter Roberts? "Put your Dexter spin on it" (Oh, Randy, he needs more than that). His thoughts on Alex Preston were positive, as he said, "He's developing into a great artist." As for Irene, she is "the one to beat."
After sending Preston and Irene to safety, Seacrest called Roberts to the first stool, and moved on to the remaining group, which included C.J. Harris, who Jackson wanted "to do more with the song." He was a bit concerned for Jess Meuse, and said, "It's going to be interesting to see how she lands in the votes tonight." Jackson feels Sam Woolf is progressing, but needs to give "a winning performance" if he is going to stick around. Caleb Johnson has been "consistent every week."

Harris, Woolf and Johnson were all sent to safety, while a pretty irate looking Meuse was sent to the bottom with Roberts. Things looked hairy for Meuse, who was thrown under the bus by the judges the night before, but it was Roberts who was sent home packing to the tune of "Lucky Man" by Montgomery Gentry.
The timing of Roberts' departure must be a letdown for the Alabama farm boy -- next week's theme is country and rock.
