On January 20, Weibo user @hdj0428 snapped these photos of bacon curtains on Wuhan City's Lumo Road.

"Frigthened me out of my gourd," she write. "So this is how the elite guard against thieves!"

Immediately, #NouveauRicheBaconDrier became a trending topic on Weibo, with people weighing on whether or not installing bacon curtains on your balcony was an acceptable way to flaunt your wealth.

"I will never understand the world of the 'tuhao' (a recently rich person with poor tastes)," says one Weibo user. "While the rich have their meat curtains, us humble folks have to greet Chinese New Year in our own way too."

He attaches a photo of a rack of dead rats drying on a balcony as example.

On Chinese social media, anything resembling conspicuous consumption attracts the 'tuhao' tag. Though in this case, the bacon curtain wasn't meant to be a flaunt.
