PASADENA, Calif. -- Despite some fans who are anxious to see it earlier, “Downton Abbey” will continue to begin its new seasons on PBS in January.

PBS President Paula Kerger said Monday it is becoming a post-holiday tradition for the show’s viewers. The British series debuted its fourth season in late September back home, but PBS holds it back. The drama had more than 10 million viewers in the U.S. when the new season began on Jan. 5.

With “Sherlock,” however, PBS is experimenting with a shorter delay. The show’s new season began in Britain on New Year’s Day and this past Sunday on PBS.

PBS also said it will premiere a British sitcom about two older gay men, “Vicious,” in June.
