Louis Tomlinson is under fire after tweeting about a Bootea smoothie he enjoyed, apparently not realizing it is sold as a weight-loss product.
The One Direction singer initially informed his 13.9 million Twitter fans, “Had an amazing @BooteaUK smoothie from Bootea.com this morning #booteashake.”
But as a number of Tomlinson’s outraged followers pointed out, Bootea is specifically geared for “weight loss,” a fact made clear on its website, which offers products that promise to “burn fat” and “suppress appetite.”
A backlash ensued, with Twitter users calling out the performer for seeming to promote a weight-loss shake to young fans.
Tomlinson ultimately deleted the tweet, but not before it was retweeted more than 10,000 times.
The Bootea Shake, meanwhile, is listed as “sold out” on the company’s website.
A rep for the singer explains, “Louis tweeted about the drink as he had one this morning and enjoyed it. However, he did not realize they are associated with weight loss, and would never endorse weight loss products.”
