‘The Good Wife’ Boss Previews Alicia and Cary’s Game-Changing Move

The Good Wife is heading toward a monumental shift.

On Sunday's episode, appropriately titled "Hitting the Fan," Alicia (Julianna Margulies) and Cary's (Matt Czuchry) plans to exit Lockhart/Gardner in order to start up their new firm are exposed, which kicks off a battle for top clients.

When the writers began formulating the blueprint for the season, "it felt like there were some milestones from the year," co-creator/executive producer Robert King told reporters on a recent conference call, adding that "this won't be the only one."

Alicia and Cary's desires to break off from the firm was also due in part to the lingering effects of the strained love triangle between Alicia, her husband Peter (Chris Noth) and her boss Will (Josh Charles) introduced several seasons prior.

"It felt like there was a slight sense we were repeating ourselves," King admitted. "Once you have a love triangle, it's a monkey on your back. there are only [a few] ways to tell that story fresh. It was more exciting to see the reverse side of it. What happens when you throw a bomb in the middle of that relationship? How do these people react differently?"

If there was any worry that events in Sunday's episode would blow over quickly, they won't, King promised.

"It doesn't go back to normal at all," he hinted of the aftermath. "What we wanted to do was see chapters in Alicia's life, see how it sets her off in new directions."

The Good Wife airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on CBS. Check back on The Live Feed following the East Coast airing for a postmortem on what's next.
