Katy Perry opens up about her divorce from Russell Brand in an interview with the Sunday Times, and how it “hurt a lot” and she had “lost hope.”

“I’m not the kind of person who is always like, ‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,’” says Perry, confessing that after the split, ”I was in bed for about two weeks.”

She continues, “I was pretty f*cked, yes. It hurt a lot. I got a good knock.”

Perry says that while she “had the outward self-identity, I didn’t have the inner kind, I hadn’t built that up.”

“My self-worth was in someone else’s hands which is never a good idea, because it can be taken from you at any time,” says the pop star. “And it was, and it was shattered.”

Perry funneled those emotions into the music on Prism, admitting that after such a rude awakening, “What I wanted to call this record at first was Adult Reality.”

Teenage Dream was me so high on that cotton-candy cloud, and then it’s like I got punched in the face and kicked down the stairs a couple of times,” she explains.

Perry goes on, “I had to face the reality that things are not always on cloud nine. I was down and out, I’d lost hope.”

The singer adds that incorporating those real-life experiences — no matter how bad they were — into her work makes her unique.

“I write very vulnerably. That’s what separates me from my peers,” says Perry.
