A local graffiti artist was not pleased, and took revenge.
In addition to selling artworks for £30 in Manhattan, Banksy has also been leaving works of street art elsewhere in New York.
The latest is in Woodford, Queens. But it was only up for a day or so before being vandalised by a local graffiti artist called Problem Child.
You can see the defacement in action below, as published by Gothamist. According to Kevin Mazeski, who shot the footage, the graffiti artist/vandal (depending on your attitude), "Kept saying about how this was his area. And the guy was pissed."
