LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- “The Walking Dead” returns with the premiere of Season 4 tonight at 9/8c on AMC, and fans of the zombie apocalypse drama should prepare for shocks, but also, a slow burn, according to the cast.
This season is expected to really feature character development not just from members of the prison gang, but the Woodbury populace, who were taken in by Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) group at the end of Season 3.
In between watching how people try to live their lives among such devastation, will, of course, be threats and terror.

“It’s no holds barred,” Chad Coleman, who plays Tyreese, previously told Access Hollywood of what’s ahead. “It’s all the wheels off, windows open, full force, unbelievable.”
Here’s more of what the cast had to say to Access about what fans will see this season on “The Walking Dead.”
Danai Gurira (Michonne): “It’s gonna be terrifying, but it’s also going to be beautifully nuanced in character development and I think that’s what’s gonna be really exciting is that push-pull of so much amazing, terrifically terrifying action connected and juxtaposed against great character moments. … So, you’ll never be comfortable.”

Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon): “The zombies became sort of manageable at the end of last season and they’re a little less manageable right now — in a very clever way.”

Chad Coleman (Tyreese): “It’s something from within and it is debilitating,” Chad said of the new threat coming to Season 4. “It’s just another damn thing in this post-apocalyptic world. Like, ‘Can we just get a breather?’ No, they’re bringing it.”
“It’s epic and it’s gut-wrenching,” he continued of Season 4. “I mean, this is no hype added. This is honestly going to blow the [audience’s] mind. I mean … if I was floored and I’m on the inside…
“The writers, producers, it just seems like they’re like, ‘OK, we know what we did in Season 3, you know what? Just add all sorts of explosives to that.’ I kid you not! It’s unreal.”

Lauren Cohan (Maggie Greene): “There’s this wonderful slow burn to this season that really, really catches you off guard when something happens because what we get this season that I don’t think we’ve had as much of is very specific deep character development, where we go off on these little loops into these characters lives and then you’re just caught from the side with the horror,” she said.
“I know everybody says that each season is going to be more intense, but this is actually going to be more intense,” she also told Access. “Get ready to know people that you think you know already in a different light and for a whole new group of characters and just see what happens to us all — good and bad.”
