The Emmy winner most recently starred on the CBS summer satirical series 'BrainDead.'
Tony Shalhoub is headed for Amazon.
The three-time Emmy winner has joined the company's drama pilot from Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Set in the 1950s, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel centers on Miriam “Midge” Maisel (House of Cards' Rachel Brosnahan). Midge has had her life mapped out for herself — go to college, find a husband, have 2.5 kids and throw the best Yom Kippur dinners in her elegant Manhattan apartment. However, when her life takes an unexpected turn, Midge will quickly have to decide what else she’s good at. Going from an uptown housewife to a stand-up comic in a grungy club in the Village is an appalling choice to everyone but Midge.
Shalhoub will play Midge's father, Abe Weissman, an academic and intellectual who believes in books and facts and speaking as little as possible.
Sherman-Palladino wrote the pilot and will direct and exec produce. As with nearly all of Amazon's original series — with the exception of Goliath — the pilot for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will be available for viewing so that users can vote on the project.
For Shalhoub, the role comes days after his CBS political satire BrainDead wrapped its first season. The series has not yet been renewed for season two, but creators Robert and Michelle King have previously spoken about having an anthology-type plan for the show, with each season taking place in a new setting.
“The first 13 take place in DC, and there's an answer to the season. The second season takes place in Wall Street, third season is Silicon Valley, and the fourth season is Hollywood,” Robert told THR in June. “We're hoping to take as much of the cast as we can to the next stage.”
Shalhoub won three Emmys for his lead role in USA Network's Monk. The actor, whose other credits include Nurse Jackie, Men in Black and Galaxy Quest, is repped by ICM Partners and Mary Goldberg.
