Renee Zellweger opened up about Bridget Jones’s Baby and addressed criticism of her looks on Wednesday’s “Today” show. Watch below!
As Gossip Cop has reported, the new installment in the beloved franchise has Bridget unsure which love interest is the father of her child. And, as it turns out, Zellweger herself didn’t even know the answer during filming. “They never actually wrote the ending in the script. I guess you gotta go out of your way to keep a secret these days,” she told Savannath Guthrie.
“They just had a bunch of Xs and Ys, and the day that we shot, they moved men and babies around,” Zellweger recalled. Guthrie pointed out that it’s been 15 years since the original film, prompting the star to remark, “Isn’t that crazy?” She went on to note, “I think that’s what so kind of interesting about this incarnation of the Bridget Jones experience. So many people who discovered her so long ago in the books, we’ve all kind of grown up with her.”
The new film has Bridget at peace with her size, but Zellweger admits, “I never thought she had a weight issue. I thought that was just something that, like all of us, we think ‘oh I’d love to change this thing about myself’ when nobody else notices it but you.”
Recently, though, Zellweger candidly discussed her own appearance after a Variety critic questioned whether changes in her looks affected whether she could still portray the iconic character. She slammed back in a Huffington Post column. “It’s something that I’ve had conversations with my friends about for a very long time,” she now told Guthrie. “It didn’t feel necessary to speak about until recently, and it did feel good. It felt real good.”
