Laurie Hernandez and partner Val Chmerkovskiy tied for the highest score on Monday’s “Dancing With The Stars” premiere. They did it with a cha cha to Bonnie McKee’s “American Girl.” Watch the video below.

Before Hernandez’s performance she talked about being excited to do “Dancing With The Stars.” And it showed in her routine. The judges love her dance.

Carrie Ann Inaba liked that Hernandez was “hungry for knowledge… [and] wanting to learn.” The judge was also impressed that the Olympian was “not going to rely on your gymnastic skills.” Len Goodman said, “You went down the proper route… with a ton of energy.” “I think it was a terrific dance… Well done,” he added. Meanwhile, Julianne Hough noted, “It was a real cha cha.” And Bruno Tonioli expressed that she was “right up there with the best ever [on the show],” and noted that he “can’t wait until ballroom [routines] next week.”

For her first dance, Hernandez and Chmerkovskiy received a total of 31 out of 40 points, tying them with James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess. Check out the video below of Hernandez and Val Chmerkovskiy’s fotxtrot to Bonnie McKee’s “American Girl” on Monday’s “Dancing With The Stars.”

The last few weeks have been a tremendous high for Hernandez. As Gossip Cop previously reported, the young gymnast won a gold medal in the team all-around final and a silver on the high beam. It’s expected her athleticism and performing live under pressure will give Hernandez an edge as the competition gets more intense on “Dancing With The Stars.”
