Days after the 15th anniversary of 9/11, Hulu is looking to take a closer look at that fateful day.
The streaming company is nearing a straight-to-series order for an adaptation of The Looming Tower, the non-fiction book which chronicles the events that led to the 2001 terrorist attacks, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Dan Futterman (Capote), Alex Gibney (Going Clear) and Legendary Television are behind the project, which is being eyed for a 10-episode pickup and a 2017 premiere. Lawrence Wright, who won a Pulitzer Prize for the 2006 book, will exec produce with Futterman and Gibney.
The Looming Tower examines the growing threat of Osama bin Laden and Al-Quada prior to 9/11, as well as the rivalry and lack of collaboration between the FBI and the CIA prior to the attack, which is still considered the deadliest on American soil.
Futterman's other writing credits include Foxcatcher, Gracepoint and In Treatment. Gibney, best known for his work on the Scientology docu Going Clear, is also an exec producer on the Amazon series The New Yorker Presents and the Netflix docuseries Cooked.
News of the project comes as Hulu prepares to launch several new ambitious originals this fall, including the Hugh Laurie series Chance and the Jeffrey Donovan-led Shut Eye. The streamer's originals slate also includes The Mindy Project, Casual, The Path and Difficult People.
For Legendary TV, The Looming Tower would join a slate of five originals, including The Expanse for Syfy, Colony on USA, Love for Netflix, Fullscreen miniseries Electra Woman and Dyna Girl as well as the ABC midseason comedy Downward Dog.
