The family comedy is anything but dead.

NBC has handed out a hefty put-pilot commitment for a family comedy from a dream team of 20th Century Fox TV producers: Fresh Off the Boat duo Kourtney Kang and showrunner Nahnatchka Khan with Fred Savage attached to direct.

The untitled single-camera comedy is based on Kang's (How I Met Your Mother)life. It will explore what it’s like to grow up as the only girl in the only mixed race family in the suburbs of Philadelphia, dealing with real-world issues like race and gender while never losing focus of her life goal — to become a Laker Girl like her idol, Paula Abdul.

Kang, who has an overall with 20th TV, will pen the script and exec produce alongside Khan. She currently serves as a co-EP on Fresh Off the Boat. She's repped by UTA and attorney Ken Richman. The comedy marks the first sale for Khan and her new head of development, Mandy Summers, via their Fierce Baby Productions banner, which recently set up a pod deal at 20th TV. She is repped by WME.

For Savage, who will also exec produce, the comedy is his first since he signed a new pact with 20th TV. Savage last teamed with 20th TV on Fox comedy The Grinder and has been a regular director on Modern Family, for which he received a DGA nomination. He's with WME and attorney Karl Austen.

The Kang deal comes as family comedies were among the biggest trends of last year's pilot season, which produced upcoming series including Speechless, American Housewife, Imaginary Mary, Kevin Can Wait, Man With a Plan, Son of Zorn, The Mick, Marlon and drama This Is Us.
