Katie Ledecky won a gold medal in swimming during the 800-meter freestyle final at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Friday. She also set a new world record. Watch the video below!
The race marked the all-star athlete’s last of her incredible run at the Summer Games. As Gossip Cop reported, Ledecky won gold in the 4×200-meter relay, alongside the rest of the U.S. women’s swimming team, which includes Leah Smith, Allison Schmitt and Maya DiRado. She also won two individual gold medals in the 200- and 400-meter freestyles, as well as a silver medal in the 4×100 freestyle relay. Ledecky’s gold medal win in the 800-meter final makes her the second female Olympian to ever win three individual freestyle events, the first athlete to achieve the accomplishment being Debbie Meyer in 1968.
This is also Ledecky’s second consecutive win in the 800-meter freestyle, as she previously took home the gold for the event during the 2012 Olympics in London when she was only 15 years old. She’s also the current world record-holder in the 400, 800 and 1,500-meter freestyles. Along with Michael Phelps and Simone Biles, Ledecky is certainly giving one of the most remarkable and record-breaking performances of the 2016 Games for Team USA.
