On Friday, NBC revealed the promo for its next live musical, showing off the cast in costume for the first time, including Maddie Baillio as Tracy Turnblad, Harvey Fierstein as Edna Turnblad (a role he originated on Broadway), Jennifer Hudson as Motormouth Maybelle, Ariana Grande as Penny Pingleton, Derek Hough as Corny Collins, Kristin Chenoweth as Velma Von Tussle, Dove Cameron as Amber Von Tussle and Martin Short as Wilbur Turnblad.

The promo will air on television for the first time on Friday night (Aug. 19) during primetime.

"Hairspray Live!" star Maddie was found through an open casting call, something she told Access Hollywood about on the red carpet during NBC's portion of the Television Critics Association Summer Tour.

"I went to an open call. There were over 1,300 girls there," she said. "I decided at 3 AM the night before that I was going to get up and go do this and I was #344 in line and four call backs later, I got it."

Members of the cast recently gathered for the production's first table read and Oscar-winner Jennifer, who recently starred in Broadway's "The Color Purple," told Access Hollywood how exciting it's been to see "Hairspray Live!" take shape.

"It's magical to watch all the characters come to life, the set come to life," Jennifer said. "When you walk in the room, you just instantly feel the energy. It's undeniable and I cannot say that enough. This is definitely next level."

"Everyone is so awesome," she added of her castmates. "I was like, 'Y'all cast the hell out of this.'"

Kristin echoed Jennifer's statements.

"Everybody's perfectly cast and it's going to kill. What can I say? It's going to kill," she said of the musical. "It's also the perfect timing for this show, in our climate today, and our humanity, not just as Americans, but as humans."

"Hairspray Live!" airs Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 8/7c on NBC.
