The exes "reign" supreme in new art work for the upcoming season.

How long will Empire keep Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) and Lucious (Terrence Howard) apart?

Not long, according to key art for the upcoming third season of the hit hip-hop drama.

The second season ended with Lucious having to marry his ex Anika (Grace Gealey) despite professing his feelings for Cookie (and knowing full well how she felt about him). A stoic Cookie then told their three sons that she was done with their father.

"We come back in season three wondering whether she could ever be done with him in that story," showrunner Ilene Chaiken recently told reporter at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. "She's going to try to move on."

However, The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive look at the key art for season three shows Cookie and Lucious very much together> Standing side-by-side, writing over the image calls Cookie the queen to Lucious' king.

A second image teases "their reign, their rules," now that the Lyon family is back in charge at Empire.

So what does this mean for Cookie's determination to go out on her own? And what lies ahead for Lucious' marriage? The new season of Empire premieres Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. on Fox.
