Lovato posted a Snapchat late Friday in which her mother was seen saying, “Everybody down in Rio gonna get the Zika virus.” The singer could be heard laughing at the remark, which many interpreted as Lovato being amused by the comment. She was then criticized on Twitter for seemingly making light of a serious disease that has left many dead and many more affected by the global epidemic.

In fact, “#DemiLovatoIsOverParty” became a trending topic worldwide. One such tweet read, “The fact that demi fans are trying to defend her is so funny, making fun of a deadly virus is no joke so just stfu #demilovatoisoverparty.” Another said, “People make jokes with a serious problem like diseases do not deserve an ounce of respect. #DemiLovatoIsOverParty.”

On Saturday afternoon, however, Lovato offered an apology. “In no way did I mean to offend anyone last night. I was laughing at how southern my mom sounded, not the issue at hand. Deepest apologies,” she tweeted. That said, the pop star also went on to write, “If you watch everything I do, you’re still a fan.. I ain’t goin nowhere bitches.”

She included the “hand waving bye” emoji. See the Snapchat clip that upset people below.
