Joey McIntyre is staying in business with Pop.
The singer, who most recently appeared alongside his New Kids on the Block bandmates in the channel's unscripted series Rock the Boat, is set to star in a scripted original comedy series for the network, it was announced Sunday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
The Joey Mac Project (working title) is inspired by his real life and centers on McIntyre as he attempts to build a career as an actor following his following his boy band past. Eight half-hour episodes have been ordered with production set to begin this fall for a 2017 debut.
In real life, McIntyre has enjoyed a busy acting career in recent years, with roles on Boston Public, The Hotwives of Orlando, The Heat and most recently The McCarthys.
“I lucked out. What are the chances of me being cast as a character named Joey McIntyre?” McIntyre said. “But in all seriousness, if you love to laugh, we have a comedy gold team behind this project who have the secret sauce for funny TV…yes, I just said that.”
McIntyre will exec-produce with his New Kids bandmate, Donnie Wahlberg, Jenny McCarthy, and Tim Gibbons (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Paul Greenberg (Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris) and Jenny Daly (Storage Hunters).
“I’ve worked with Joey since we were kids,” Wahlberg said, “but seeing all of his many talents come together in this show – I've never been more excited.”
The Joey Mac Project joins Pop's growing original scripted series slate, which also include Schitt's Creek, recent acquisition Wolf Creek and Ali Wentworth's forthcoming comedy NIghtcap.
