Jared Leto revealed details about playing The Joker in the new comic book movie, Suicide Squad, on Friday’s “Good Morning America.” Watch the actor’s full “GMA” interview below!
“This character has been written about, acted, interpreted, reinterpreted and reimagined for 75 years,” Leto noted about the iconic supervillain. “So, to be asked to take the baton and run with it was quite an honor and responsibility.” In taking on the role, Leto revealed he never broke character while on set. “I dove pretty deep, you could say,” he laughed. “When you take a part like this, you become a detective and journalist in a way, and I have to say it was a role of a lifetime. It was the most fun I think I’ve ever had.”
As for what to expect from the actor’s incarnation of the character, Leto said, “He’s a sick, twisted, but I think very lovable Joker.” And when it came to nailing that infamous evil laugh, the actor admitted it took “a lot of experimentation” and “a lot of really bad laughs” to get it right. “I remember wandering the streets in New York and Toronto, where we were shooting, and just laugh out loud and see how people would react to it,” the actor recalled. “When I started to hone in on this laugh, I realized it was the one that people would turn around and be like, ‘What the hell is that?'”
Leto went on to talk about the possibility of returning for a sequel or another film in the DC Comics universe, admitting he hasn’t “really [said] goodbye” to the character. “I think The Joker’s in there somewhere,” continued the actor. “I feel like this film is an introduction to The Joker and I’m hopeful that we will see more to come.” Watch Leto’s full “GMA” interview below!
