The cast and producers of the IDW comic book adaptation made the announcement Saturday during their panel in San Diego.
Diehard Wynonna Earp fans, rejoice.
The Syfy IDW comic book adaptation has been renewed for a second season, the stars and producers announced Saturday during their San Diego Comic-Con panel. Season two, returning in 2017, will consist of 10 episodes, down from the freshman order of 10.
The Canadian acquisition is based on the comic of the same name created by Beau Smith and was developed for TV by showrunner Emily Andras (Lost Girl). The series follows Wyatt Earp’s great granddaughter as she battles demons and other supernatural beings. Wynonna is a witty and wild modern-day gunslinger, using her unique abilities and a dysfunctional posse of allies to bring the paranormal to justice.
Melanie Scrofano (Damien) will star as Wynonna. Tim Rozon (Being Human) will play con artist Doc Holliday and Shamier Anderson (Defiance) is set as the mysterious Agent Dolls.
Wynonna Earp will be produced in Calgary by Seven24 Films and distributed by IDW Entertainment.
The drama, which wrapped its 13-episode freshman run in late June, averaged a small but loyal viewership of 556,000 total viewers — a fraction more than the since-canceled Gale Anne Hurd Universal Cable Productions-produced Hunters and besting critical favorite 12 Monkeys by about 150,000 viewers without DVR. Likely helping Wynonna Earp score a renewal has been its vocal social media fan base and warm reviews, with THR praising the series for its "Canadian charm."
The NBCUniversal-owned Syfy has strived in the past few years to reinvent itself with a focus on more traditional science-fiction fare along the lines of critical favorite Battlestar Galactica. Syfy's recent success stories include critical darling 12 Monkeys (renewed for a third, yet smaller season), The Magicians, The Expanse, Z Nation, Killjoys and fellow acquisition Dark Matter. Syfy has anthology Channel Zero due in October and Incorporated set for the fall.
