New footage screened at PaleyFest offered a closer look at the season two threat.
Just because Fear the Walking Dead is heading out to sea doesn't mean that the walker threat has ended.
The cast and creator of AMC's Walking Dead prequel series hit the PaleyFest stage Saturday afternoon to offer diehard fans a glimpse of the upcoming second season.
The prequel series will kick off its second half with a mild time jump after the horrific events of season one that saw the show's central blended family handle the death of one of their own. They're now partnered with the mysterious Strand (new series regular Colman Domingo) who is leading Travis (Cliff Curtis), Madison (Kim Dickens) and their brood to his extravagant yacht as L.A. burns.
Two clips offered a glimpse at what to expect from the season two premiere. The first features everyone on the yacht and the survivors debating whether or not they can trust Strand as they head for San Diego. The second clip, which is not being released, depicted Nick (Frank Dillane) under water and about to be attacked by a bloated zombie floating along the top of the water.
"Zombies don't drown; they keep floating back up," showrunner/co-creator Dave Erickson reiterated Saturday.
The second-year drama — which sees its episode count upped to 15 (and set to air in two parts like the flagship) — will focus both on "threats and obstacles on sea and on land," Erickson said. "We try to find a place where they can drop anchor and stay. … [But] we don't know when we first hit the water which direction we'll go. Strand has some ideas but we don't know how much we can trust those ideas."
Noted Domingo: "[Strand] is an enigma wrapped in a riddle, wrapped in cash."
For her part, Alycia Debnam-Carey previewed that there will be "multiple alliances" on board the yacht as her character, Alicia, is still reeling from the loss of her boyfriend and looking for someone she can confide in.
Curtis, meanwhile, noted that Strand, Daniel Salazar (Ruben Blades) and Nick have gone to "apocalypse school" and are best suited to surviving the new world, while Dickens stressed Madison's quick thinking is her best asset though everyone is still trying to figure out what their best skillsets are going forward.
"I think she has good instincts to not trust these new characters in this extended family but she has good instincts and is able to gather new information and get inside their heads as she makes new alliances," Dickens said.
