'The White Princess' centers on England's War of the Roses.
Starz is returning to the throne.
The pay cabler has greenlit The White Princess, the sequel to the award-winning The White Queen, Starz announced Tuesday.
Based on Philippa Gregory’s best-selling novel of the same name and part of The Cousins’ War book series, The White Princess will center on England’s War of the Roses as told from the female perspective. The story, which is set in 1845, follows the rise of the House of Tudor, and the rocky marriage between Princess Elizabeth of York and King Henry Tudor. When rumors arise that Elizabeth's long-lost brother Prince Richard is alive and hoping to take back the throne, she must choose a side.
Writer Emma Frost (The White Queen) returns to serve as showrunner and will exec produce along with Gregory. Playground’s Colin Callender (The White Queen, The Dresser) will exec produce with Company Pictures’ Michele Buck (Parades End). Lachlan MacKinnon (Burton and Taylor) will produce the project, which hails from Company Pictures.The eight-episode limited series is currently in preproduction.
“The White Queen was a phenomenal performer at Starz," Starz managing director Carmi Zlotnik said in a statement. “There is a dearth of programming that tells women’s stories and The White Queen was embraced with great success by audiences worldwide. The passionate fanbase for Philippa Gregory’s historical novels are undeniable and we are confident The White Princess’will become the next must-see fandom drama series.”
Following its August 2013 premiere, The White Queen became an important awards player for the pay cable network, earning four Emmy nominations and three Golden Globe nominations.
The White Princess joins Starz original dramas Black Sails, Power, Outlander and the upcoming Girlfriend Experience.
