Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) has signed on to direct the pilot of the TV reboot, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
A modern reinvention inspired by William Peter Blatty’s 1971 book, The Exorcist is a propulsive, serialized psychological thriller following two very different men tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession, and confronting the face of true evil. Fantastic Four writer Jeremy Slater is set to pen the one-hour drama.
Wyatt will also exec produce with Slater, James Robinson, David Robinson and Barbara Wall. 20th Century Fox Television will produce in association with Morgan Creek Productions.
The move marks a return to TV for Wyatt, who previously directed the pilot of the AMC period drama Turn. After rising to success with the 2011 smash Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Wyatt has largely moved away from movies after dropping out of several studio tentpoles like the Apes sequel, Denzel Washington's The Equalizer and most recently Gambit, starring Channing Tatum.
Wyatt's most recent turn behind the camera was the 2014 remake of The Gambler starring Mark Wahlberg.
Like Wyatt, Fox is no stranger to remakes like The Exorcist. This past fall saw the launch of Minority Report, which ailed to catch on with viewers and quietly went off the air. This pilot season also saw the network explore a possible remake of the 1980 film Urban Cowboy. However, Fox passed on the project in December.
