The 'Sons of Anarchy' and 'Bastard Executioner' alum will return to comedy with a starring role in the network's take on Australian format 'Upper Middle Bogen.'
Katey Sagal is returning to comedy.
The Sons of Anarchy and Bastard Executioner alum has been tapped to star in CBS' untitled comedy pilot based on Australian format Upper Middle Bogen, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The untitled comedy centers on Bess (uncast), a wife and mother who learns she was adopted and that her birth parents are a flamboyant but loving family of drag racers. Sagal will portray Julie, Wayne's (John Carroll Lynch) wife and the matriarch of the family. After Wayne lost an eye, Julie stepped in as the lead driver of Team Wheeler.
The role marks Sagal's return to on-screen series regular comedy following her seven-season run on FX's Sons of Anarchy and her one-season turn on husband Kurt Sutter's follow-up at the network, Bastard Executioner. The actress most recently guest starred on Fox comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine and served as the narrator on NBC's short-lived comedy series A to Z. The untitled CBS pilot also comes after her 14-year run on animated comedy Futurama, in which she voiced multiple characters including leading lady Leela. Her comedy credits include 8 Simple Rules and her iconic role as cigarette smoking housewife Peggy Bundy on Fox's Married … With Children. Sagal is repped by WME and B&B Management.
Dan O'Shannon (Modern Family, The Odd Couple) and Upper Middle Bogen duo Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope will pen the script for the single-camera comedy. Todd Holland is attached to direct the pilot, which is a co-production between CBS Television Studios and ABC Studios, in association with Dark Toy Entertainment. Swoosie Kurtz co-stars as Bess' widowed mother who is revealed to have adopted her daughter.
