He'll play an inspiring acting teacher in the half-hour pilot.
Henry Winkler is headed for HBO.
The actor, perhaps best known as Fonzie from Happy Days, has signed on to co-star in HBO's Bill Hader comedy pilot Barry.
Barry stars Hader as an ex-Marine who works as a low-rent hitman in the Midwest. Lonely and dissatisfied in his life he begrudgingly travels to Los Angeles to kill someone and ends up finding an accepting community in a group of eager hopefuls within the L.A. theater scene.
Winkler will portray Gene Cousineau, an inspiring acting teacher. The role marks the beloved actor's latest small-screen gig following Childrens Hospital, New Girl, Parks and Recreation, Royal Pains and Arrested Development. Winkler, also a prolific producer, is also attached to serve as an EP on CBS' MacGyver reboot after serving in the same capacity on the original series.
Hader will pen the script, exec produce and direct the pilot for Barry in addition to starring as the title role. Alec Berg (Silicon Valley, Curb Your Enthusiasm) will also exec produce. The comedy hails from an overall deal Hader inked with HBO in May 2014.
Winkler joins a cast that also includes Sarah Goldberg (Hindsight), Glenn Fleshler (True Detective) and Anthony Carrigan (The Blacklist). Winkler is repped by Paradigm and Management 360.
