George and Amal Clooney met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday at her office in Berlin to discuss Syria’s refugee crisis, and the efforts they could make to help solve the problem.

The Oscar-winner and his wife Amal, a human rights lawyer, were also accompanied by former British foreign secretary David Miliband, who currently serves as the head of the International Rescue Committee. In an interview with The Associated Press shortly after the meeting with Merkel took place, Miliband said, “We talked about the responsibilities of all states, not just European states, but states around the world to deal with what is a global problem, not just a Syrian problem or a German issue.”

Clooney wanted to meet with Merkel to thank her for her leadership in allowing around one million refugees into Germany, the most of any European country. As Gossip Cop reported, the actor attended a press conference on Thursday for his new movie Hail, Caesar! at the Berlin Film Festival, during which he became annoyed with a reporter who questioned his dedication to helping with Europe’s refugee crisis.

An irked Clooney told the journalist, “I spend a lot of time working on these things, and it’s an odd thing to have someone stand up and say, ‘What do you do?’ That’s fine, knock yourself out.” He added, “I have gone to places that are very dangerous, and I work a lot on these things.” Clooney then went on to note that he would be meeting with Merkel to address the issue, as well as with refugees, whom the actor is expected to talk with later on Friday.
