Adam Pally is returning to Fox.

The Happy Endings and Mindy Project alum has been tapped to star in the network's time-travel comedy pilot Making History, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The comedy centers on three unlikely friends who find an even less likely way to travel through time, irreversibly complicating their personal lives in 2016, as the great moments of the past collide with today's popular culture — with hilarious and quite disastrous results.

Pally will topline the comedy as Dan, a nerdy computer science professor at a small college and the "failure" of an accomplished family. Dan is unpopular with both students and colleagues on campus, where his extreme intelligence comes off as odd. He invented time travel, hoping to get a fresh start and meet less shallow people. He studied human behavior scientifically and methodically uses stolen music, movie lines and popular culture to great acclaim in the past, where people find him interesting, dashing and gallant. The potential series will feature two Dans — the "nerd rage" guy having a hard time in the present, and the cooler more carefree guy in the past.

For Pally, Making History becomes the critical favorite's first leading role following co-starring parts in ABC's Happy Endings and Fox's The Mindy Project. On the film side, Pally just finished production on CBS Films' Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life and starred in/produced Joshy, which premiered at Sundance. He's repped by UTA, 3 Arts and attorneys Jon Moonves and Loan Dang.

Happy Endings graduates continue to be in high demand this pilot season. Co-star Eliza Coupe on Wednesday booked the female lead in Hulu's Seth Rogen comedy pilot Future Man, while Zachary Knighton will co-star in ABC family comedy pilot Pearl. Co-stars Damon Wayans Jr. and Casey Wilson have both been getting multiple offers this pilot season.

The Grinder's Julius "Goldie" Sharpe will pen the script and exec produce alongside Last Man on Earth creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Seth Cohen also exec produces the single-camera comedy from 20th Century Fox Television.
