'Blood and Oil' duo Josh Pate and Nicholas Schutt co-created 'Citizen' alongside the 'Me and Earl and The Dying Girl' director.
Hulu is looking to add another drama to its roster.
The streaming service is near a deal for a pilot pickup to Citizen, from Me and Earl and the Dying Girl director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and Blood and Oil duo Josh Pate and Nicholas Schutt, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
From Paramount Television and Anonymous Content, the drama is described as a fresh take on the hero origin story. It blends elements of magical realism and gritty vigilantism and is set against the backdrop of a vibrant, "supernaturalized" Los Angeles.
Gomez-Rejon, Pate and Schutt created the concept and will pen the script as well as exec produce alongside Anonymous Content's David Kanter, Matt DeRossand Steve Golin.
Citizen marks the latest pilot pickup for Hulu. It joins Regina Hall starring single-camera entry Crushed, about an African-American family that runs a wine business in Napa; and Future Man, from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
The news comes as Hulu continues to expand its slate of originals with studio buys in a bid to bulk up and compete with fellow streamers Netflix and Amazon as well as the broadcast, cable and premium networks.
Gomez-Rejon (American Horror Story, Glee) is repped by WME, LBI Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham. Pate (Legends, Falling Skies) is with WME. Schutt is with Paradigm and Mosaic.
