‘Miranda’s Rights’ and ‘Midnight, Texas’ both hail from Universal Television.
Legal dramas may be poised for a big comeback at NBC.
A day after formally putting spinoff Chicago Law into development, the network has handed out pilot orders to legal soap Miranda's Rights, as well as supernatural drama Midnight, Texas.
Miranda's Rights is an hourlong legal soap that centers on 28-year-old Miranda Coale, who gets a shot at redemption six years after a sex scandal upended her life when she’s hired by a group of millennials living and working together in a start-up law firm. Soapy fare has, of course, become increasingly popular this development season following the ratings success of Fox's Empire.
Katie Lovejoy (The Selection) will pen the script and executive produce with John Glenn (Eagle Eye) for Universal Television. Her TV credits include NBC's Dracula and she's currently adapting best-seller The Selection as a feature for Warner Bros. (Selection was previously twice adapted for TV at The CW but did not move forward.) She is repped by CAA and Myman Greenspan. Glenn is repped by WME and manager Brian Lutz.
Midnight, Texas hails from True Blood author Charlaine Harris, and is described as True Blood meets Twins Peaks. The best-selling novelist adapting her book trilogy as a drama series that explores what happens when the real world and the supernatural collide in a dangerous, sexy place full of dark secrets and mysterious people. It takes place in Midnight, Texas, a remote town where your neighbor could be a vampire, a witch, a werewolf, even an angel. Mystery, horror and romance combine to both enthrall and frighten any outsiders who decide to venture into this unusual place.
Harris will executive produce the drama from Universal Television alongside studio-based David Janollari and Monica Owusu-Breen (Lost), the latter of whom will pen the script. The third and final book in the series, Night Shift, will publish in May 2016 and join Midnight, Texas and Midnight Crossroad. Repped by APA and JABerwocky Literary Agency, Harris' books have sold more than 37 million copies worldwide.
