Jada Pinkett Smith is thanking Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, for promising to make the Oscars more diverse.
As Gossip Cop reported, Smith called for a boycott of the upcoming Oscars ceremony on Saturday, a few days after only white actors were nominated for the second year in a row. On Monday, she elaborated in a video message, arguing that black actors should distance themselves from the event until they are treated fairly and appreciated. Then, on Monday night, Isaacs said in a statement that she was “heartbroken” over the racial issues, and vowed to make “changes” to increase diversity.
Now, about 24 hours later, Smith has written a brief response on Facebook. “I would like to express my gratitude to the Academy, specifically Cheryl Boone Isaacs, for such a quick response in regard to the issue at hand. I look forward to the future,” she said. The actress gave no indication as to whether she still plans to boycott next month’s awards show.
Spike Lee, Snoop Dogg, and Michael Moore are among the other stars who have also suggested boycotting. Others, like Whoopi Goldberg and George Clooney, have expressed anger and disappointment over the situation, but are not embracing the boycott movement. Interestingly, Will Smith, one of the snubbed stars, has yet to personally weigh in, even after being attacked Monday night by his former “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” co-star Janet Hubert (Aunt Viv) for his wife’s stance.
