One contestant auditioned with a medley of songs by all three judges.
The final week of American Idol’s season 15 auditions started tonight. Judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick Jr. saw auditions from some of the hopefuls who turned out for the Idol audition bus tour.
The first person to audition was Miranda “Poh” Scott, who is the younger sister of last year’s contestant, Shi Scott. She had a raspy voice similar to her sister’s, and she sang Sara Bareilles in her audition. She made it to Hollywood, so hopefully she’ll make it further in the competition than her sister did.
Amelia Eisenhauer auditioned next, playing the fiddle during her performance of “Many Rivers To Cross” by Annie Lennox. She had a strong, soulful voice. Connick pointed out that she has a mysterious vibe. All three judges said yes.
Next up, Joy Dove burst into the audition room with a lot of energy. She sang “Jambalaya,” and the energy never fell. “I’m glad you did that song,” Urban said, and the other judges praised how bold and loud her voice is. They gave Dove a golden ticket.
Mackenzie Bourg decided to do things a little differently, auditioning with a medley he arranged that combined songs from each of the judges. He sang parts of “Stupid Boy” by Urban, “Come By Me” by Connick and “Love Don’t Cost A Thing” by Jennifer Lopez, closing it out with some of “Making Memories Of Us” by Urban. Not only was he creative in his choices, but he also had a beautiful voice. How could the judges say no? Bourg is headed to Hollywood.
Andrew and Aaron Birdwell, brothers from Michigan, sang together in the audition and couldn’t find the right notes to save their lives. They were quickly rejected.
Jenna Renae auditioned with “She Don’t Love You” by Eric Paslay, accompanying herself on the piano. Lopez said she really seemed like a true performer. Her audition was very tight, and she sailed through to Hollywood.
Renae was followed by Mario Bond, who went blind at a young age. He sang Natalie Cole’s “Inseparable.” Lopez said there were parts of the performance that she really loved but parts that took her out of it. Connick said there were some strong technical aspects of his voice, but overall, it wasn’t what he was looking for. The judges all said no to Bond, and he did not advance.
Adam Lasher, who auditioned in season 14 but didn’t make it past Hollywood Week, returned for one last shot at the Idol title. He sang a creative rendition of “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” and the judges loved it. They gave him his second chance. “It feels very good to be going back to Hollywood Week,” Lasher said.
Closing out the night, Emily Brooke, another returning contestant came back for another golden ticket. She was only 15-years-old when she competed in Hollywood Week last season, and she said she has spent the past year working on her voice based on the judges’ feedback. “You got so much better,” Lopez instantly said when Brooke finished singing. Connick said it was the best audition of the day, and all three judges welcomed her back to another Hollywood Week.
