If you were wondering why everyone in your Twitter feed last night, who wasn't going on and on about Star Wars, appeared to be watching Survivor — it might be because the CBS reality competition was literally the only original outing from the broadcast networks on Wednesday.
CBS stacked the 31st season's two-hour finale and one-hour reunion special against a slew of repeats and a few holiday specials. Not surprisingly, it emerged as the top show on the key demo (2.3 rating among adults 18-49) and the most-watched 9.5 million viewers. That was steady with last week's episode by both measures.
Also good news for Survivor, that was also in line with last December's finale and the spring cycle as well. It just goes to show you: these veteran reality series — Survivor hits season No. 32 in the new year — remain nearly impossible to challenge in their consistency. (Critically, this latest season seemed to win over a few as well.)
With a full week to go before the Christmas holiday, the rest of the Big Four (and the CW) seem tapped out. Fox aired repeats, as did ABC and the CW, while NBC pulled out holiday special Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas. That earned a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49.
