Caitlyn Jenner wrote an op-ed on Monday to apologize for controversial comments she made in a Time interview, in which she said transgender people who “look like a man in a dress” make others “uncomfortable.”
As Gossip Cop reported, Jenner was on the shortlist for Time’s 2015 Person of the Year, an honor which instead went to Angela Merkel. However, Jenner did give the magazine a candid interview.
In her piece, Jenner said maintaining an attractive physical appearance is one of the most important ways to shine a positive light on the transgender community. She said her “presentation” “puts people at ease,” adding, “To be honest with you, if you look like a man in a dress, it makes people uncomfortable.”
Jenner upset many people in the transgender community with her seemingly shallow comments, and now she has penned an essay for WhoSay to address the “man in a dress” quote. The reality star wrote, “I think I caused a lot of hurt with this comment, and I’m truly sorry.” She went on to explain, “What I was trying to say is that… people who look ‘visibly transgender’ sometimes can struggle for acceptance and may be treated poorly by others.”
Jenner added, “My comments probably made it seem like all I care about is fashion, or makeup, or appearance. I can tell you I really enjoy all of that — it’s who I am.” But she also assured people that she wants to live “in a world in which how a trans person is treated isn’t dependent on how they look.” Tell Gossip Cop what you think about Jenner’s apology.
