Starbucks is at the center of a controversy over its new red holiday cups because some people feel they don’t properly represent and celebrate Christmas. Stars are now reacting to the situation, and Gossip Cop has gathered celebrity takes on the ongoing debate.
In past years, Starbucks’ holiday cups have featured such Christmas imagery as snowflakes and reindeer, but this year they’re simply solid red. Some Christians have even gone as far as to say the coffee company is waging a war on the holiday. One person who agrees is presidential candidate Donald Trump, who suggested a boycott of Starbucks at a recent event.
“If I become president, we’re all going to be saying, ‘Merry Christmas’ again,” he told supporters. Rob Lowe also took to Twitter to express, “Between their program to have baristas lecture me about race and now their removal of ‘Merry Christmas,’ I’m officially over Starbucks #done.” Many celebrities, however, disagree with those perspectives.
Famed film critic Richard Roeper tweeted, “Count [Donald Trump] among the astonishingly ignorant that think Starbucks is waging war on Christmas.” Montel Williams sarcastically said, “Remind me how Starbucks is conducting a ‘war on Christmas’ by designing it’s holiday cup in a Christmas color?” And “Real Housewives” star Bethenny Frankel argued, “It’s absurd. Many people don’t observe xmas, red is in the spirit & no greeting means no wasted cups.”
Demi Lovato suggested, “Why doesn’t Starbucks at least make the cups about the actual season: winter? (snowflakes, snowmen..etc.).” Questlove joked, “Here i was thinkin starbucks was tryna do a clever twist on america’s obsession (Solo cups) but thanks to the internet i realize its war.” Comedian Jim Norton tersely recommended, “If you’re upset that Starbucks cups aren’t ‘Christmassy’ enough, please hang yourself.” Meanwhile, Meghan McCain remarked, “Isis is slaughtering Syrian children but let’s keep getting offended over college ‘safe spaces’ and starbucks cups.”
