MTV's Scream is making a change at the top.

Season one co-showrunners Jill Blotevogal and Jamie Paglia are stepping down, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Instead, frequent collaborators Michael Gans and Richard Register (Make It or Break It, Celebrity Deathmatch) will serve as showrunners for the second season of the horror remake from Dimension Television. Blotevogal will remain with the series as a consultant consult, while Paglia will no longer be involved with the show.

Sources say producers Dimension TV — whose film arm produced the Kevin Williamson franchise that the series is based on — were unhappy with the creative direction of the revival. (The series was renewed for a second season after airing only half of its 10-episode order.)

Despite a massive marketing blitz and build-in brand awareness, Scream averaged only 755,000 total viewers during its 10-episode freshman run. The series, which was overseen by the late Wes Craven, opened to largely negative reviews. THR's critic wrote that the series "never plays as anything more than copycat cleverness."

In an interview with THR at the start of the season, Blotevogel said there was the potential for Scream to reboot itself potentially as an anthology series and reiterated shortly after at Comic-Con that producers hoped to keep as much of the cast on board for future seasons.

Scream becomes the latest MTV series to see its showrunner exit. Awkward saw creator Lauren Iungerich exit the comedy after its third season.

Scream was developed by Blotevogel, Dan Dworkin and Jay Beattie. Beattie and Dworkin penned the original script with Blotevogel boarding after Scream was picked up to pilot. The drama was originally developed by DiGa Vision, with former MTV execs Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley attached. Harvey and Bob Weinstein also exec produce the series alongside the late Craven, Marianne Maddalena and Cathy Konrad. Matthew Signer and Keith Levine produce. Williamson is not involved.

Gans and Register are repped by Gersh.
