‘Chicago Med’ Preview

"Chicago Med" joins NBC's Chicago franchise on Tuesday night, and the new series won't have a slow start

"It really starts off with a big old crash bang who's-it/what's-it sort of deal," Colin Donnell, who plays Dr. Connor Rhodes, a trauma surgeon, on the new series, told Access Hollywood.

"He's on his way to work and… catastrophe strikes and so he really makes a big old banging entrance into the hospital for the first time," the actor ("Arrow," "The Affair") added.

Nick Gehlfuss, a familiar face to "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago P.D." fans (he plays Dr. Will Halstead), said there will be some friction between Connor and Will almost immediately.

"As you know from the backdoor pilot, we blew up the hospital. … We already rebuilt it and a ribbon cutting ceremony is what starts us off, and is quickly brought to a halt when an elevated train crash happens and a bunch of injured people come on in and with that, brings in a new member of the hospital, which I have a little issue [with] – Colin. … So Colin and I, we butt [heads, a little]. We come from very different backgrounds, different schools of thought as far as medicine and… it's good for drama.

"He's my superior, which also digs at me even more because I do have to give over to him. Even though I did a surgical residency, I've now switched over to emergency medicine. So I do know where he's coming from as a surgeon and so all of that plays into my need to prove myself even more, which is going to get Will into trouble," Nick added.

In addition to Will, "Chicago Med" features other characters that have appeared across the other Chicago shows, including Oliver Platt's Dr. Daniel Charles and Yaya DaCosta's nurse April Sexton. Yaya told Access that the new show builds on last season's back door pilot.

"The pilot last season was lovely and we definitely laid a foundation, but the show has taken on a new life, I really have to say -- on so many levels," she said. "They hired wonderful castmates for us, [there's a] new fresh energy and talent, the set is next level."

"Chicago Med" premieres Tuesday at 9/8c on NBC.
