Ricky Gervais is returning to host the Golden Globe Awards on January 10, 2016, announced NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association on Monday. The comedian first hosted the Globes in 2010, and returned in 2011 and 2012, even though many felt his jokes at the expense of actors and actresses had gone too far.
Robert Greenblatt, the entertainment chairman of NBC, which airs the Globes, said in a statement, “We’re excited to have Ricky Gervais back to host the most enjoyable awards show of the season in his own inimitable way,” adding, “Fasten your seats belts.” Lorenzo Soria, President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, noted that Gervais will have the ballroom at Beverly Hilton Hotel where the awards are handed out, as well as the viewing audience, “at the edge of their seats.” And Dick Clark productions, which produces the Golden Globes said, “What will he say? What will he do? We can’t wait to find out, and we are so happy that he’s back!”
As Gossip Cop reported, Philip Berk, the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, said Gervais “crossed the line” with his 2011 opening monologue during which he poked fun at some of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Despite that, Gervais was asked back for the 2012 show, where he once again took A-list celebrities down a peg and even dropped an F-bomb on live TV.
Gervais has repeatedly said he wouldn’t return to host the Golden Globes, but the comedian has obviously had a change of heart. For the three years since he last hosted, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler earned rave reviews for their their job helming the awards show.
