Jimmy Fallon was crowned by the Harvard Lampoon an “Emperor of Comedy” on Saturday. The “Tonight Show” host, who wore a wreath atop of his head, was driven by a Roman chariot around Harvard Square to the steps of the Harvard Lampoon building, where he was given the nation’s oldest humor magazine’s Elmer Award for Excellence in Humor, as well as its customary check for 85 cents.
Fallon told the crowd that he was “honored” to be at the Harvard Lampoon ceremony, before jokingly apologizing for the traffic he might have caused, adding, “It’s just so hard to get an Uber this time of night, so I figured a chariot is best.”
The “Tonight Show” host is just the seventh person to be honored with the Elmer Award in the magazine’s 139-year history, and the first in this century. Past recipients of the award have included Robin Williams, John Cleese, and former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno.
Before being bestowed with the award, Fallon noted on Instagram that he felt “actually honored” the prestigious humor magazine had chosen him. The Harvard Lampoon has traditionally been a feeding ground for “Saturday Night Live” writers, and even produced such household names as Conan O’Brien and Colin Jost.
