Preliminary returns have Jimmy Fallon again beating Stephen Colbert, averaging a 3.6 overnight rating among metered market households. That's a Friday best since Fallon fist took the Tonight chair back in February 2014. That's also 38 percent bump from the show's summer average.

Colbert placed second for the night, averaging a 2.8 rating in households. the CBS host has been No. 2 to Fallon since Wednesday -- though his Sept. 8 debut brought a much bigger crowd than any late-night series has of late.
