Stephen Colbert is getting some very bad advice from his late-night competitors as he gears up to host his first “Late Show” on Tuesday night. Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O’Brien, James Corden, and many more have imparted “words of wisdom” to help Colbert with his new gig. Watch the funny video below!
In the first entry of a seven-part video series by Vanity Fair, some of Colbert’s talk show rivals were “kind” enough to share with him what they’ve learned about hosting. “Be very rude to the guests and wear a lot of cologne,” suggested Kimmel. New “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah said, “Be careful what you tweet,” in reference to Noah’s controversial old Twitter jokes that were deemed offensive by many.
“I have no advice for you, Stephen,” said John Oliver, former “Daily Show” correspondent and now the host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight.” He added, “You’re gonna be alright. You do you, as irritating 12-year-olds say.” Larry Wilmore, host of Comedy Central’s “The Nightly Show” threatened, “You’re at 11:30 opposite me motherf*cker, so don’t go too fast, alright?”
“Late Late Show” host Corden, who isn’t actually a rival, considering Colbert is his lead-in on the same network, recommended to “save the best bits of your show for the last four minutes.” Meanwhile Bill Maher, host of HBO’s political talk show “Real Time,” suggested that Colbert “do a character. No one wants to see you.”
“Late Night” anchor Seth Meyers reminded Colbert of the time when he won an Emmy and “Gwen Stefani announced your name as ‘Stephen Colbore.'” He added, “I don’t think I’m alone in show business in thinking that’s a better way to say your name.” And finally, O’Brien urged Colbert to make an investment in something other than his own TV show. “I think you should try and buy land,” said O’Brien. “Real estate. That’s what’s gonna last.”
