Serena Williams beat sister Venus Williams at the 2015 U.S. Open on Tuesday, taking two of the three sets.
The siblings went head-to-head in a historic match for the 2015 Women’s Singles quarterfinals. Serena, ranked number one in the country, was seeking to defeat Venus, ranked number 23, in her quest for a calendar-year Grand Slam, which entails winning four different tournaments: the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, the French Open, and the Australian Open. Serena has already mastered the achievement 21 times, the third-most of all time.
Venus, of course, is no slouch. She’s won seven Grand Slams over the course of her career. Though they’ve been successful in Doubles, the Williams sisters have faced off 27 times now. In fact, they first competed against each other at the U.S. Open 14 years ago, and they’ve each emerged victorious against the other over the years.
Despite the rivalry, Venus and Serena have remained the best of friends off the court. It’s a testament to their respective skills that they ended up facing each other in this year’s U.S. open. And now with the match complete, Venus gets to go back to being Serena’s number one fan for the upcoming semifinals. A consolation prize, sure, but a remarkable family experience, too.
