Cosmopolitan Editor-in-Chief Joanna Coles would executive produce the project.
NBC is looking to Cosmopolitan magazine for its next drama.
The network is developing a new show based on the popular women's magazine, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Inspired by the life of Editor-in-Chief Joanna Coles, the show centers on the outrageous lives of those behind Cosmo.
Coles is on board to executive produce the untitled project, which will explore the same issues the magazine's readers are likely dealing with. Among them: balancing career and family, finding your identity, getting your heart broken and managing friendships — all while wearing the perfect pair of jeans that flatter any body type.
Produced by Universal Television, the script was penned by former Parenthood writer Sarah Watson. In addition to Cole, Watson, Ruben Fleischer and David Bernad will executive produce. Holly Whidden — who serves as the director of editorial brand strategy for Hearst Magazines, a media conglomerate that houses Cosmo — will produce.
It's not the first time the network has attempted a series based on Cosmo and its boss. Less than a year ago, NBC was developing a show with a very similar logline from The Bachelorette's Leslye Headland, with Cole also attached as an exec producer. The single-camera comedy followed a failed political blogger who restarts her life in New York as the "sex" editor for a prestigious and provocative women's magazine.
