Consider it the legal version of ABC's 'Grey's Anatomy.'
NBC is looking to do for legal soaps what Grey's Anatomy did for medical soaps.
The network has handed out a script commitment to legal soap Miranda's Rights, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The drama is described as a legal soap that centers on 28-year-old Miranda Coale, who, six years after a sex scandal upended her life, gets a shot at redemption when she’s hired by a group of millennials living and lawyering together in a start-up law firm.
Katie Lovejoy (The Selection) will pen the script and exec produce alongside Universal Television-based John Glenn (Eagle Eye).
Soapy fare has become increasingly popular this development season following the ratings success of Fox's hip-hop entry Empire.
For her part, Lovejoy won the Humanitas Price Student Drama Fellowship for her House spec and was the highest-ranked female writer on the 2010 Black List for her original feature The Arsonist's Love Story. Her TV credits include NBC's Dracula and she's currently adapting best-seller The Selection as a feature for Warner Bros. (Selection was previously twice adapted for TV at The CW but did not move forward.) Lovejoy is repped by CAA and Myman Greenspan.
Miranda's Rights marks Glenn's first sale of the development season. He's currently reworking NBC's Mark Burnett/Roma Downey guardian angel drama pilot Unveiled, which is being redeveloped for this season. Glenn (Allegiance) has previously produced two pilots for NBC and Universal Television: Hatfields & McCoys and Tin Man. He's repped by WME and manager Brian Lutz.
