Why Does This Man Want A Colander On His Head In His Driving Licence Photo?

Ian Harris is making a very specific protest.

Here is the passport photo Ian Harris, 51, from Brighton, submitted to the Driving Vehicle and Licensing Agency (DVLA) to put on his licence earlier this year.

The DVLA rejected it.

The DVLA rejected it.

But why did he want that picture?

Well, it's because it's a piece of religious headgear.

Well, it's because it's a piece of religious headgear.

Headgear, you see, is not generally acceptable on DVLA photos, but the turban and the hijab are both allowed.

Harris is a member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. If you've somehow missed this religion, it basically exists to protest the teaching of Creationism in schools. Pastafarians, of which Ian is one, say, "there are no strict rules and regulations, there are no rote rituals and prayers and other nonsense. Every member has a say in what this church is and what it becomes."

Ian told the Mirror: "I'm fighting for the right to have my religious headgear shown on my photo. I don't understand the DVLA should be able to discriminate whether my religion is valid. I have a spiritual connection with the Flying Spaghetti Monster, until they have brain probes how are they going to say I don't."

Harris has been rejected once by the DVLA, but he's going to have another go.
