It's official: HBO's Confirmation has nabbed its director.
Following prolonged negotiations, Dope breakout Rick Famuyiwa has signed on to helm the premium cable network's Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas TV movie, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Famuyiwa was rumored to be near a deal when THR broke news of the project in March.
The HBO Films telepic — which will begin production in the early summer — will detail the explosive 1991 Supreme Court nomination hearings (at which Hill testified), which brought the country to a standstill and forever changed the way people think about sexual harassment, victims' rights and modern-day race relations. Scandal star Kerry Washington is attached to play Hill and executive produce.
Academy Award-nominated writer Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) will pen the script and executive produce the drama, which hails from Groundswell Productions in association with ABC Signature Studios. Groundswell CEO Michael London (ABC's upcoming soap Astronaut Wives Club) and production president Janice Williams will executive produce alongside Grant and Washington.
Famuyiwa most recently wrote, executive produced and directed Sundance Film Festival hit Dope. The movie sold to Open Road in a highly competitive bidding war. The film is set for release June 19.
Famuyiwa is repped by WME, Oasis Media Group and Del Shaw.
