Essex police said the men broke into the property in Beambridge, Basildon, just after 9pm on Monday.

The 22-year-old woman was about to leave her home and head to the maternity ward when the incident occurred, ITV News reported.

Despite the fact that she was suffering contractions, the men beat the pregnant woman and slashed her face with a butcher's knife, the Daily Mail reported.

Police said they also assaulted her partner before leaving the scene on foot.

The woman was taken to hospital in an ambulance and later gave birth to a healthy baby.

Her partner told the BBC: "My girlfriend remains in hospital with a serious head injury when she should be celebrating the birth of our child.

"This was an extremely traumatic experience for us both.

"Please help the police to catch these men whose actions have tainted a period of time which should be a happy one for us."

Police described the men as being in their early to mid-twenties, with four of the group white and one black.

Detective inspector Joel Henderson said: "This was a shocking attack on a young woman who was in labour.

"It is vital we get those people responsible off the streets of Basildon."
