Celebrities are taking to Twitter on Sunday to mark International Women’s Day, while also pointing out that “we’re not there yet” in terms of gender equality. See photos and video below.
Pink, Cameron Diaz, Victoria Beckham, and Kourtney Kardashian are among the female stars who have posted messages on social media in honor of the day, turning “#HappyWomensDay,” “#InternationalWomensDay” and “#IWD2015″ into trending topics. A few are sharing inspirational quotes, some have posted photos to celebrate the women in their lives, and others are following Hillary and Chelsea Clinton’s “#NotThere” initiative.
The campaign features women on social media removing their usual profile photos to show just a generic female avatar. “On International Women’s Day, the world woke up to find that many women were not there. This symbolic act reflected what a new analysis of women and girls’ progress says about the state of gender equality: we’re NOT THERE yet,” says the mission statement from the Clinton Foundation and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The program is part of the “No Ceilings: Full Participation Project.”
Karlie Kloss changed her Twitter photo, and tweeted, “I’m proud to support @ClintonFdn #NoCeilings campaign to inspire the full participation of women and girls. We’re close, but #NotThere yet.” Kristen Bell posted, “If I knew how to change my profile pic, I’d change it to this today. http://NOT-THERE.ORG #WomensDay #LadiesNight.” Chrissy Tegein and Kristin Chenoweth are also among the group of celebrities supporting the campaign.
Pink tweeted a photo of herself with daughter Willow (see above), writing, “‘The question isn’t who’s going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.’ – Ayn Rand. Happy International Women’s Day.” Beckham shared a picture of herself at an AIDS clinic, and wrote, “We must stand up for Women’s rights, education and health. Join me to make change happen. #IWD2015.” Marlee Matlin commented, “I’ve surprised many in Hollywood with my strong handshake. But why shouldn’t a woman be strong? #HappyInternationalWomensDay Stand strong!”
“I am surrounded by strong women every day. I am so inspired by my strong, smart sisters, mother and grandmother all day long,” Kardashian wrote on Instagram. “Most importantly, teach your children (girls and boys) about what today means and lead by example. #internationalwomensday #teachyourboys.” Elizabeth Banks tweeted, “Happy #InternationalWomensDay! Shout out to all the sparkling goddesses in the world. Shine on, you crazy diamonds.” The actress further posted on her official site, “Hey ladies, what’s cooler than being a woman? Nothing. Boom.”
Kerry Washington tweeted, “HAPPY #InternationalWomensDay How are celebrating today?! #MakeItHappen #PaintItPurple #WomensDay.” Nicholas Hoult was one of the few men to comment, kicking of his tweeting Sunday with, “Firstly, happy international women’s day!” Sarah Michelle Gellar was also celebrating husband Freddie Prinze. Jr’s birthday, and wrote, “you deserve [applaused] on #NationalWomensDay #MenforWomen but I wish you could have fixed #DaylightSavingTime.” And Brooke Burke even posted, “Its #InternationalWomensDay. Didn’t know we had 1! We shall celebrate with an extra hard sweat in #BootyBurn 2day. YES, that’s a celebration.”
