Prince is being sued by Sony after allegedly stealing the services of Judith Hill, a former contestant on “The Voice” who secretly recorded an album with Prince and released it earlier this week. The problem is that Hill had allegedly signed an exclusive recording contract with Sony and producer Jolene Cherry before she made the album with Prince.
According to TMZ, after Hill broke out on “The Voice” in 2013, Sony and Cherry, the producer who helped discover Lady Gaga, took an interest in her singing and say they signed her to a deal. The outlet reports that Sony and Cherry heard rumors of secret Hill-Prince recording sessions a few months ago and gave her a warning. On Monday, Hill and Prince unexpectedly released an 11-song album for free online. Sony and Cherry are reportedly suing Prince for damages.
It’s not the first time Hill has made headlines. During the enormous controversy over the James Franco-Seth Rogen comedy The Interview, Hill recorded a tongue-in-cheek love song to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, jokingly expressing her affection for the leader with Franco-centric lines like, “You’re so arresting, and I could wait here 127 Hours, it’s true / And if This Is The End, and then the credits roll / There’s only one Oscar, and baby it goes to you.” Hill has a real knack for provocation.
