PlayStation’s ‘Powers’ Preview – ARTICLE

Sony PlayStation enters the original scripted drama world on Tuesday with the premiere of "Powers."

The story follows Sharlto Copley's Christian Walker, a man who used to have superpowers, but lost them. Somewhat disgruntled with his new place in life (as a regular human), he's now pounding the pavement as a detective, investigating homicides involving people with extraordinary abilities.

"He's working on the police force as a kind of tokenistic face because he was very famous. He was kind of a rock star superpower at the time," Sharlto told Access Hollywood.

In the drama's fictional world, which is based on the graphic novel from co-creators and executive producers Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, people with powers are kings.

"It's like these guys behave like rock stars because they can fly and the guys that have real power, they have groupies and they have – they sort of do whatever they want," Sharlto said. "They're heroes too, like rock stars are, we make the world a better place, but we also do whatever we want. [Christian is] kind of bitter and twisted and wants his powers back and wonders, if he had them back, could he behave more responsibly this time."

Before he lost his abilities, and the kind of fame that landed him on magazine covers, Christian was known as Diamond. But on his road toward his original powers superstardom, he had a big brother-like figure in his life in the form of Wolfe, played by "Hannibal" alum Eddie Izzard.

"I was a mentor to Diamond/Christian Walker and to Johnny Royale and to every kid that's had powers because I have such a number of powers," Eddie told Access (Johnny is played by "Game of Thrones" alum Noah Taylor).

Something happened with Wolfe in the past, and when viewers meet him in the premiere episode, he's being held in a location called The Shaft.

"What happened there, what I did, why I'm... in this prison called The Shaft -- and I've been there for 10 years -- what I did before that, that's all gonna start revealing and unravelling," Eddie said.

Wolfe is also a threat to humans.

"Wolfe views the human race as prey and as somewhere between conquest and lunch and potentially intriguing, but if he ingests them, then he has what they have," Eddie said.

Sharlto said he was fascinated by the idea of the series.

"It's a very interesting take on the source material that I think the writer came up with, which is really the society that is obsessed with -- in the same way that we're obsessed with celebrities and rock stars and movie stars and TV stars now -- people are obsessed with people that have powers and it's really kind of a social commentary on the obsession," he said.

The first three episodes of "Powers" drop on PlayStation Network and the PlayStation Store on Tuesday.
